FAQ

THE PODCAST

Who makes Gender Reveal?

Most episodes are produced and edited by our host, Tuck Woodstock, and our senior producer, Ozzy Llinas Goodman. Sometimes, we’re able to bring in other trans audio makers to help with particular episodes.

How do I spell/stylize Gender Reveal?

It’s just “Gender Reveal” :) Our social media handle is @gendereveal because “genderreveal” was already taken by the Gender Reveal Industrial Complex.

I’ve never listened to the podcast before. Where should I start?

We’ve created several “starter packs” to help you find great episodes related to your specific interests. If that sounds like too much work, we recommend starting with the newest episodes and working your way backwards, rather than starting from season one.

How do you find and choose your guests?

We meet our guests through a combination of friends, social media, listener suggestions, PR emails, grant applications, and existing as trans people in the world. Our guests are typically people who engage with gender and transness as part of their daily work, such as activists, authors, artists, academics and actors.

We book our guests very strategically to make sure that the majority are Black, Indigenous, Latinx and/or people of color, and to ensure that we include trans women, trans men, and nonbinary people of various backgrounds.

I’m trans! Can I be a guest on your podcast?

Maybe! We typically plan our guest list several months in advance, but sometimes we have a last-minute opening. (And if not, we can always add you to our waitlist.) Feel free to reach out with a short explanation of the work that you do and how it relates to gender.

Can I be a guest on your podcast? I’m not trans but I am queer / work with trans people / am related to a trans person / wrote something about trans people.

no ❤️

But didn’t you interview cis people in the past?

yes, but they were very special cis people handpicked by our team.

How can I support the podcast?

Thanks for asking! It would be super helpful if you spread the word about how cool and good our show is, lol. You can also support us financially via Patreon, Venmo, Cash App or PayPal.

I joined your Patreon but I haven’t received my reward yet! Why is this?

Thank you for supporting us! Because Tuck is in charge of running the podcast, grant & mutual aid programs, merch store, social media accounts, and co-running an entire separate company (Sylveon Consulting), it sometimes takes them a couple months to catch up on fulfilling Patreon rewards. Rest assured that, even if you cancel your Patreon subscription before we get your rewards sent out, we will send you whatever we owe you. (Note: there is a 2-month minimum on most rewards and a 3-month minimum on $40+ rewards.)

Can I buy an ad on your podcast?

Sure! Trans individuals can use our Theymail form to book a tiny sliding-scale ad for their creative projects, fundraisers, self-employment hustles, etc. Larger businesses (a.k.a. anything with 2+ full-time workers) can contact us to purchase ads. We reserve the right to decline any advertising offers.

I have a question about gender. Where should I send it?

Please submit your question via this form. You’ll have the option to stay anonymous. We’ll do our best to answer your question on a future episode, although we can’t guarantee an answer to every question.

I have a question not about gender. Where should I send it?

If your question isn’t answered by this FAQ page, you can reach us via our contact page.

TRANSCRIPTS

Where can I find transcripts of the podcast?

Click the “EPISODES” tab and scroll down a bit.

Do you still need help transcribing episodes?

We’d love for you to join our team of transcriptionists! We run all transcription assignments through the #transcription-team channel of our Slack, so join us there to get started.

Are transcriptionists paid?

Transcriptionists can invoice us for up to $1.50 per minute of audio. Some transcriptionists waive their fee as a donation to the show. Either way is great with us.

GRANT & MUTUAL AID

When is your next grant cycle?

Grant applications typically open in October, with winners announced by December 31.

Who is eligible for a Gender Reveal grant?

Our grant program is open to trans and two-spirit people whose work supports marginalized  communities and/or fosters exploration and celebration of gender diversity. Most of our grant cycles are open exclusively to applicants who are Black, Indigenous and/or people of color.

How do you choose the grant winners?

Winners are chosen by a team of anywhere from 3-11 trans judges. As of 2020, all judges are offered compensation for their time, and all are Black, Indigenous, or people of color. We do not have a set grading system for applicants; judges are encouraged to make selections based on whatever criteria feels appropriate to them. You can view our past grant winners here.

Is your mutual aid fund open right now?

Our mutual aid fund unfortunately only opens for day or two every year, typically around Trans Day of Visibility (March 31). We are always accepting donations for the next round of payments.

Who is eligible for Gender Reveal mutual aid funds?

Every round of mutual aid has a slightly different pool of eligible applicants. Keep an eye out for our next round to see who qualifies.

How do you fund the grant and mutual aid programs?

We donate roughly 20% of our Patreon income to the grant program. Occasionally, an artist chooses to donate some or all of their merch proceeds to the grant as well. The rest of the grant and mutual aid expenses are funded through individual donations and online fundraising.

Do you know of other grants or mutual aid programs that I can apply to?

There are a few listed here (in the financial section).

I have some money to donate to someone in need. What should I do with it?

Wonderful question! We’d be happy to help you distribute any extra funds to trans people in acute need. Simply reach out to us via our contact form (or, if you feel comfortable, send us the funds directly with a note in the memo line).

MERCH

Where can I find your merch store?

Our store is located at bit.ly/gendermerch.

Why is your merch store empty? Is the store broken?

Our shop automatically closes/empties at midnight on the first day of every month. Once we’ve had the chance to distribute last month’s proceeds among the artists and beneficiaries, we’ll upload new designs into the shop for you to enjoy. [Note: Our shop will be back on hiatus starting November 2023.]

How does the nonprofit merch store work?

Great question. Our “merch” store is a rotating collection of designs submitted by trans artists and printed/shipped by a third-party vendor. On the first day of every month, we stock the shop with new stickers, shirts, mugs, etc. At the end of the month, we send half of each item’s proceeds to the corresponding artist, and the other half to an LGBTQ-focused organization of the artist’s choice. Then, we restock the shop with new stuff and the cycle continues.

How big is your cut of the merch proceeds?

$0.00! We call it a nonprofit merch shop for a reason. All of the money we receive is split evenly between the artist and an organization of the artist’s choice. (Sometimes, an artist chooses to donate 100% of proceeds because they’re an angel.) Past beneficiaries include the Sylvia Rivera Law Project, Trans Lifeline, G.L.I.T.S., and Gendered Intelligence.

But then how do you make money?

Ah ha. We don’t. Oops.

An item I like isn’t in stock. Did you sell out?

Sort of. We rotate designs in and out of the shop on a monthly basis. If there’s a previous Gender Reveal design that you’re dying to get your hands on, feel free to send us a friendly message, and we can probably get it restocked within a month.

I have a question about merch sizing / operations / shipping / etc!

You’ll want to reach out to Spring’s customer service team. We do not directly handle any of the merch.

Can I submit a design to the merch store?

Absolutely! We’ll need a high-res transparent png of your final design(s) sent to gendereveal[at]gmail[dot]com. You can also send us a pitch or sketches before jumping to the final version. Whether or not we use your design(s), you still retain all legal rights to the work.

Why do you use Spring to print your merch?

We agree that Spring is not ideal. However, it’s essential that we use a vendor who 1) offers unisex apparel 2) offers sizes up to 5XL and 3) manages all of the order processing, printing and shipping for us. If you have suggestions of vendors who meet that criteria, let us know.

TUCK & COMMUNITY

Does Gender Reveal still have a Slack group?

Yes! The link keeps breaking lol so just email/DM Tuck and they’ll send you a new one.

I love the podcast! Can we be friends?

Honestly, I am not even a good friend to my existing friends because I am always working (oops). Feel free to reach out and say hi! But if you’re looking for emotional support and trans community, the Slack group mentioned above is your best bet.

Can I send Tuck something in the mail?

Sure! Our mailing address is PO Box 50297, Brooklyn, NY, 11205.

Can I hire Tuck to talk to my company/organization about gender?
